This colorful vintage ceremonial diablo or 'baltazar' mask, danced during carnival and feast day ceremonies, comes from the municipality of 'El Pueblito' in the state of Querétaro.
Skillfully carved and painted in multi-colored striped patterns, the features of this mask include original goat horns, a goat haired brow and mustache and a painted tongue fashioned out of rubber inner-tubing. In determining age and authenticity one of the most important indicators, in addition to the wear patterns, paint layering and patina, are the pan head screws that secure the horns to the brow. Modern reproductions are almost always evinced by their modern screws. This diablo is an older example, dated to the 1960's / early 1970's.
Dimensions: measures 14 inches high x 6 inches deep. The horn spread measures 23 inches.
