This exceedingly rare 19th century Mexican folk retablo represents 'The Descent from the Cross', or 'The Deposition of Christ', as it is also known.
The legend along the bottom edge can be loosely translated as follows:
'The real image of the blessed Christ with title of Lord of the crown is venerated in the village of Isla Guaca, of devotion to the Sacred Image, in the year of (obscured)'.
In lower right, a barely legible inscription:
'A Devocion a Prudencia'
Dimensions: 17 inches vertical x 12 inches horizontal.
In overall excellent, original condition with only minor paint loss.
