A rare original ceremonial monkey mask, likely made for a child, from the indigenous Piaroa people of the middle Orinoco Basin in Venezuela. This ceremonial mask represents the 'baquiro' a black and white monkey who performs together with Re'yo, protector of the rain-forest , in the Piaroa's 'Warime' ritual. The Warime, a fertility and harvest ritual dance performed only once a year, is the most important of the Piaroa ceremonies.
Bark cloth, beeswax and resin over a hand caned frame.
