This one of a kind 19th-century Continental slant front desk, initialed and dated 1848 along the narrow blueprint drawer, is likely Swedish in origin. It is finished in the original hand painted polychromy -- a soft, muted, and deeply patinated shade of lipstick orange, with ebonized bun feet.
The lower section of the desk contains three large drawers, over a small architect's storage drawer, flanked by supports for the drop-front. The hinged-front conceals a series of 15 drawers and one cubby door, each with the original hand-painted pinwheel and compass design patterns, shown in the photos above. Given the large scale, somewhat deceiving in photos, the case panels are joined by sturdy dovetails with large lock and bail side handles for moving and transport.
Please note: other accessories shown for scale.
Dimensions: 53 inches wide x 23 inches (closed front) or 38 1/4 inches (open front) x 47 1/4 inches high.
