This 18th century Spanish colonial baul from Mexico is rich in both history and character Often times, damaged, restored or repaired furniture would be discarded and scrapped for firewood but in the case of this unique sabino and pine wood chest from Chiapas, instead of adding it to the scrapheap, some resourceful craftsman disguised some objectionable knot hole with a nine inch long patch, hand carved and hand etched in the form of a speckled trout. Trailing behind this trout, and moving in the opposite direction, is some other enigmatic creature, perhaps a turtle, or even another trout.
In addition to the clever repairs described above, the dovetails are also worth mentioning. The corners are joined by a Pato de Gallo (rooster's feet), a sophisticated interlocking hand carved dovetail joint that is unique to Mexico.
Dimensions: 53 inches long x 22 inches deep x 20 inches high.
