This early 18th century Spanish colonial silver 'lampara' was designed and fabricated using nothing other than the purest 18th century colonial silver together with several iron bolts and bits. Using ball-pein hammers, raising hammers, heat and an anvil, the silver was hammered, bent, worked, heated, cooled, annealed, chased, raised and finally assembled together to become the masterful creation that it is today. The main body features a finial ring surmounted by a basin covered over every inch in elaborate hand raised repousse and winged cherubs over candle armatures terminating into candle sockets. The upper body, bearing the weight of the lower assemblage by chain, features a pear shaped finial surmounted by a silver flag in repousse. The overall level of quality and workmanship is superlative.
We removed all hardware, ring bots, bolts and the wood finial cap inside lower basin to weigh the lampara. Measured in three parts and broken down as follows:
Four candle armatures: 16.53 troy oz
Lower basin , excluding hardware and ring bit: 53.025 troy oz.
Upper basin, including chain and excluding hardware: 33.425 troy oz.
Combined weight: 109.655 troy ounces or 3409.718 grams
** See La Plateria Del Museo Franz Mayer by Cristina Esteras for similar examples.
Condition: in overall excellent, original condition with age tarnished patina throughout. Unrestored.
Dimensions: overall height, not including the suspension chain, is 41 inches. The lower basin measures 15 inches diameter. The overall diameter, including the candle armatures, is 24.5 inches.
