A large and impressive 17th / 18th century Spanish colonial bronze 'thunder mug' (signal cannon) with beautiful green patina throughout. Mexico - circa 1700.
The firing of a cannon usually marked the beginning of a festival or a religious ceremony. Because of the sparks, together with the bright flash that was generated upon ignition, these cannons also came to be known by the Spanish word for camera -- 'cámara'.
Dimensions: measures 6 inches high. Base diameter is 4.75 inches.
Weighs an impressive 14.5 lbs.
