We are proud to be the custodian of this exceedingly fine, rare and important 16th century Spanish / Spanish colonial period coffret -- completely hand carved in the Mudejar style with a saddle shaped top and acanthus scrolls. The front, side and back panels with gilt-wood birds surrounded by a richly colored red polychromy and stippling throughout. The shoe feet in the form of a recumbant gothic style feline - rich with color and lustrous patina.
Original iron lock mechanism, lock plate and strap hinges.
