A finely crafted 18th century Spanish colonial marquetry inlaid papelera (document box). Made entirely by hand in the workshop of a skilled marquetarian craftsman, hand hewn red cedar panels were traced, incised, and furrowed before conforming fruitwood mosaics were glued and assembled into place. The interior side of the lidded top features a large polychrome painted botanical urn flanked by two smaller urns and the underside features a fanciful crescent moon surrounded by night stars. The hand forged strap hinges, hasp and lock plate, backed in red English felt, are all original. With a rich, honey colored finish and lustrous surface patina. Circa 1750.
Dimensions: 10.5 inches long x 7 inches wide x 8 inches high.
Condition notes: minor marquetry loss, surface abrasions. In overall sound and sturdy condition.
