A rare late 18th / early 19th century hand colored colonial engraving. This 'oracion' (prayer) represents a shackled 'Anima Sola', pleading for salvation in the fiery flames of purgatory.
The Anima Sola, for those unfamiliar, is a departed ancestral soul awaiting judgement in the flames of purgatory. The Anima Sola (Lonely Soul) may be invoked when a family member or loved one dies in sin or conversely, to send an enemy to a state of temporary suffering or misery in purgatory.
Hand colored engraving backed on board and displayed in a hand painted period wood frame. Mexico - circa 1800.
Dimensions: approximately 11.5 inches x 9 inches.
Condition: overall cracquelure. Loss along lower edge. Unrestored, original.
