A fine 18th century Spanish colonial period leather wrapped 'escritorio' / 'petaca' with atypical drop front revealing a large tray over two false drawers and two operable drawers. The leather is tooled over nearly every inch in patterns of flora and fauna and scalloped around the lidded edge. Original iron corner brackets, hinges, hasp and lock-plate. Beautiful color and lustrous surface patina. Circa 1700 - 1750.
For those unfamiliar, an 'escritorio' is a type of small writing desk. A petaca is a traveling case. Given the drop front and drawers, this box meets the criteria for both definitions,
