A good 18th century Spanish colonial 'scribe' box, or 'escribania' as it is known in Spanish -- for the storage of papers, ink and writing instruments. Red cedar with hand carved cedar wood moldings, iron lock-plate and a small, quasi secret compartment along the lower edge of one side. The iron escutcheon backed in English felt. Interior with hinged till box.
