A rare early 20th century silver 'Hamsa' from Morocco
The 'Hamsa', or 'Hand of Fatima' as it is also known, is a hand shaped amulet that is worn (usually on a chain or neckalce) throughout North Africa and parts of the Middle East as a sign of protection. It is a potent symbol of defense that is commonly used for protection against the powerful evil eye.
The Hamsa offered here comes from Morocco's Suss River Valley region in the Anti Atlas Mountains. The obverse face features a tree of life motif with a simple maker's mark on the reverse face. Cast from high quality silver, a metal believed to represent purity and hold magical properties.
Dimensions: overall height on display stand is 5.25 inches. Hamsa measures 2.75 inches x 1.5 inches.
