This fine and rare turn of the 20th century (circa 1900) hand woven and hand knotted 'Tulu' comes from central Anatolia. The word 'Tulu' means 'long haired' in Turkish, and long haired Tulu such as the one offered here, were used in village homes as sleeping beds. Thick angora wool was a good source of warmth -- providing insulation from chilly Anatolian nights and frosty alpine air.
The main design feature is a unique geometric motif in natural brown surrounded by a field of natural white wool and multiple natural brown borders. Interestingly, this piece is artist signed by the proud weaver who wove it. The small cluster of ten red knots in lower right is an abstractly woven signature. The wool is incredibly soft and supple with glossy patina throughout. The colors are all natural.
The selvedge is tightly woven and complete on both sides. The ends are finished in a very fine flat-weave with hand tied wool tassels.
