A vintage hand carved and polychrome painted Ajitz mask from the highlands of Guatemala. Cedar with innumerable paint layers. Circa 1950.
The Ajitz character, a hallowed priest who serves the legendary Tekun Uman, always carries a shoulder bag with divination crystals, red bean and a small idol in the form of Tohill, the main K’iche’ deity. Given the red surface, the Ajitz is often mistaken for Lucifer. The Maya-K’iche’ identify the Ajitz with K’aq K’oxol, a powerful entity who inhabits the valley of Los Altos.
Dimensions: approximately 8 inches x 5 inches.
Condition notes: in excellent, original condition.
