We are proud to offer this exceedingly fine and exceptionally rare 18th century colonial silver candle-stick. Raised 31 inches high on a lobed base with block feet, the features of this altar stick include acanthus strap work in the neoclassical style, florid repousse with hand chased blossoms, multiple node rings and a large drip pan surmounted by a candle-socket.
Shaped and formed by hand more than 250 years ago using nothing more than copious amounts of the purest, unadulterated 18th century silver, nearly 10 lbs / 151 oz to be exact, the metal was shaped with ball-pein hammers, raising hammers, heat and an anvil. The silver was hammered, bent, furrowed, chased, heated and cooled and once the proper form had been established, the metal was annealed, a metallurgical process that involves slow cooling to reduce brittleness and increase strength.
The base, the stem, the underside of the drip pan, the top of the drip pan and the candle socket all bear the hallmarks of chief assayer Diego Gonzales de la Cueva (1733 -1778), together with the quality mark of the eagle and the fiscal tax stamp with a letter 'M' (Mexico) flanked by the columns of Hercules.
Please note: other accessories shown for scale only.
