This 19th century Mexican folk retablo painting represents Santa Barbara, one of the most elusive subjects in retablo art. Santa Barbara is the patroness saint of fire, gunners, masons, miners and storms. According to popular belief, she beheaded by her father in 235 A.D. who was in turn, struck by a bolt of fire from heaven.

Condition: scattered paint loss,pitting, multiple punctures along top edge.
