This classic 19th century Mexican folk retablo represents San Jeronimo, patron saint of scholars and philosophers. In retablo art Saint Jerome is almost always depicted as he is here, as a hermit living together with a lion in the foirest. Oil on tin. Circa 1880. Attributed to the 'Saucito Master'.
