A nicely rendered 19th century Saint Isidore retablo, executed on unusually heavy gauged tin. Circa 1860 - 1880.

San Ysidro Labrador (Saint Isidore the Laborer), the patron saint of farmers, is invoked for agricultural issues, good weather (before picnics) and prosperous crop. In retablo art, his is always depicted in the fields, shown disproportionately larger than his angel helper and cattle. According to legend, San Ysidro was instructed by God to stop working on the Sabbath but the Saint was too overwhelmed with work and would not obey. The lord warned him three times before San Ysidro finally accepted the Lord's offer of an angel to help him complete his chores.

Dimensions: 14 inches vertical x 10 inches horizontal.

Condition notes: scattered paint loss.
