This early 19th century colonial painting on heavy gauge copper represents 'Nuestra Senora de Los Remedios' or 'Our Lady of Remedies', an extremely popular image which has been venerated in both Spain and Mexico since the Spanish conquered the New World. In Spain she is often associated with the Spanish Reconquista, a chapter of Spanish history which began with the Islamic occupation of the Iberian Peninsula and ended with the expulsion of the Moors and the Alhambra Decree in 1492. In Mexico legend tells of Cortes' soldiers carrying a figure in her likeness which they hid among maguey plants (hence the agave in the image offered here) to be later venerated in the event they survived an attack by the Aztecs. During a subsequent battle with the Aztecs one of Cortez's men reported seeing a young girl throwing dirt in the eyes of an Aztec warrior, an act for which she would later became the 'guardian of the Spanish Army'.
