Double Sided Reliquary
This early to mid 19th century double sided Andean reliquary is unparalleled in both quality and rarity. On the obverse face, Our Lady of Copacabana embraces the Christ Child, clutching a candle and rosary in her right hand. She is flanked by two saints, presumably Saint Anthony of Padua and San Juan de Dios. On the opposite face, the passing of the Virgin Mary, from earthly life to heavenly, is represented in the form of 'El Transito de Maria' or The 'Dormition of Mary'. Beneath Mary's glass tomb, a banderole is flanked by two faithful petitioners. The inscription can be translated as follows: Devotion of Marcelino Garcia and Monitacia Corte.
These devotional images are hand painted on imported tin-plate by a skilled artisan who used nothing more than a single squirrel hair as a paintbrush. Given the incredibly fine detail, the atomic size flower blossoms, it's difficult to comprehend the control and finesse required to design, develop and execute on such nano-scale. The tin plate remains protected behind the original leaded glass crystal. The case, also original, is made from the highest quality Andean silver. All raised on a high quality custom made stand.
Dimensions: reliquary measures 5.25 inches x 3.25. Overall height on stand is 8.5 inches.
Condition is excellent with only minor paint loss.
