This 18th century Spanish colonial oil on copper painting represents Saint Anthony of Padua, patron saint of lost articles, fertility, starvation, expectant mothers, amputees and shipwrecks. The opus of a trained colonial painter, Saint Anthony and the Christ Child are framed by the silhouette of a city-scape set against a blue sky and verdant landscape. Hand painted on heavy gauge copper by a skilled artisan who was clearly a master of his trade. The overall level of artistry is superlative.
Dimensions: 9 inches x 6 inches.
Condition: scattered paint loss and surface abrasions.
