The practice of honoring important political leaders and military figures has a long history in Mexico. Important leaders were often commemorated in the form of a tin 'retrato,' similar to this 19th century hand painted example which depicts 'Colonel Carlos Gonzalez' in full military regalia with epaulettes and a gold hoop earring. The tin is displayed behind glass in a period wood frame. The text on verso, though only partially legible, is inscribed: Coronel Carlos Gonzalez. The second line is obscured.
Dimensions: Frame measures 10.5 inches high. Retrato measures 6 inches.
In overall excellent, original, unrestored condition.
