Spanish Colonial Signal Cannon
A large and impressive Spanish colonial thunder mug (signal cannon or hand cannon) with double headed Hapsburg eagle, partially legible inscription "COMSERRA?" and date, possibly 1835. Cast bronze with cast bronze cannon ball. Original verdigris surface patina. Mexico - circa 1700. Weighs an impressive 12.5 lbs.

The firing of a cannon usually marked the beginning of a festival or a religious ceremony. Because of the sparks and bright flash generated upon ignition, these cannons also came to be known by the Spanish word for camera -- 'cámara'.
