A great 19th century Anima Sola retablo. Circa 1870. Oil on heavy gauge tin.
The Anima Sola, for those unfamiliar, is a departed ancestral soul awaiting judgement in the flames of purgatory. The Anima Sola (Lonely Soul) may be invoked when a family member or loved one dies in sin or conversely, to send an enemy to a state of temporary suffering or misery in purgatory.
The inscription along the lower edge translates as follows:
'Portrait of the Anima Sola that is venerated in the Cathedral of Guadalajara - the most sorrowful of purgatory'.
Dimensions: 10 inches vertical x 7 inches horizontal.
Condition: in overall excellent, original unrestored condition with only minor paint loss, puncture holes along top edge and minor loss to lower corners.
