Baúl de marquetería
Marquetry Inlaid Six Panel Cedar Chest
Oaxaca, Mexico. Circa 1750
This 18th century Spanish colonial six panel 'Baul de Marqueteria' from Oaxaca represents a quality of craftsmanship often imitated but rarely equaled. Hand scraped and hewn white cedar panels are bound by hand forged iron hardware and joined by the skillfully carved interlocking dovetails of a master colonial craftsman. A large and impressive silk backed iron lock plate is surrounded by incised trailing vines, whimsical birds and serrated stars inlaid in corresponding shapes and conforming marquetry patterns. Made from naturally patinated clear heartwood timbers of Mexico's lowland red cedar and highland white cedar, esteemed for its strength, prominent grain and rich color.
Excellent dimensional wood shrinkage evident along marquetry lines.. Oaxaca. Circa 1750,
