A fine and rare early 19th-century Woodland Indian / Great Lakes Region elm-wood bowl with highly figured burl patterns and reticulated handles. Carved, adzed, and shaped from an enormous knotted burl, this copiously proportioned, utilitarian sculpture has been treasured by its various custodians for nearly two centuries—the evidence of which is manifested in each time honored repair. A fantastic 19th-century smelted lead repair, made from American Indian mined ore, was utilized on the foot.
Dimensions 22 inches long x 17.5 inches wide x 11.5 inches high.
