This early 20th century Kurdish hand woven and hand knotted tulu comes from the Marash area in Southeastern Turkey - circa 1900 - 1920. The word 'Tulu' means 'long haired' in Turkish, and long haired Tulu such as the one offered here, were used in village homes as mattresses and / or coverlets. Thick angora wool was a good source of warmth -- providing insulation from chilly Anatolian nights and frosty alpine air.
This graphic Tulu, made entirely from hand spun wool with a sturdy kilim foundation, was used in a village home as a Divan cover, with the shaggy side down. The wool is soft and supple, with a blue, red and natural brown foundation surrounded by long tufts of glossy red wool. The unique color combination is sublime.
The selvedge is tightly woven and complete on both side. The ends are finished in a tightly woven flat-weave with hand tied pig tail braids. Dyes are both vegetal and aniline.
