San Leonardo, one of the most obscure subjects in retablo art, is also one of the most popular. His popularity stems from his dual patronage, invoked by both prisoners and woman in labor. In this image Leonardo carries a shackle in one hand and a martyr's palm in the other. He is accompanied by a man to his right, presumably a prisoner praying for release and a woman to his left, presumably praying for a safe and easy labor.
